School is a place where we should be exposing our students to new technology literacies. Students will need to effectively communicate, collaborate, interact with, and publish information using technology.

As professionals, may we suggest the creation of and editing of homemade videos. The creation of videos encompasses all of these skills and allows students the freedom and flexibility to be creative. In creating videos students need to be able to utilize recording tools, editing software, and need to be able to publish it for an audience. Students can choose to incorporate music, props, special effects, and can choose their presentation and video style. Teachers are encouraged to provide students with resources and use technology as a means of assessment and publication. The variety of new literacies and skills that are needed in order for a video to be produced are many.


Things to have students consider when creating a digital video:

  • Who will be watching it (multiple audiences)?
  • Who will play what roles in creating the video? (What are the streangths of my team memebers?)
  • What information will be included?( or omitted)
  • How will it be distributed and viewed? (method of broadcast)
  • What is your purpose for creating it. In other words what message are we trying to convey? (entertainment, persuasion, advertisement, educational, tutorial, etc..)
  • Do all components of the video send the intended message or express the same mood? (music, sound effects, voice, text, graphics, video, etc...)
  • How will you deliver your message? (humor, shock, sadness)
  • Is the length of the video appropriate?
  • How will I keep the viewer engaged and interested?
  • Who or what will be recorded and is copyright an issue?
  • Is the music in the video original or do you need to get clearance?
  • How will I evaluate what I have learned?

New literacies when combining other technology with digital video
  • Understanding and explaining information using many different formats: text, video, images, audio, animation
  • Thinking critically about what they see and read on the internet, as well as analyzing and synthesizing that information to communicate effectively
  • Proficiently locating information on the Internet, as well as evaluating it for accuracy, utility, and bias
  • Utilizing previously learned information in the field of technology (blogs, social networking sites, etc) in the classroom, for homework/assignments/projects
  • Combining speech, text, and visual aides persuasively
  • Utilizing and analyzing the effectiveness of camera techniques such as the long shot, the close up, fade-ins, fade-outs, montages, etc.
  • Meaningfully sampling and remixing media content
  • Following the flow of stories and information across multiple modalities (transmedia storytelling)
  • Writing interactively
  • Using multiple senses to learn
  • Determining where to focus attention
  • Determining if many people will understand the message
  • Making it avalible to deaf/ visually impared viewers
  • Understanding and using appropriate writing and language
  • Expressing ideas clearly
  • Determining appropriate mood for a given audience

How will students accomplish this
  • Trial and error
  • Consulting a manual, teacher or rubric
  • Working collaboratively to share ideas ynchronously and asynchronously via tools like GoogleDocs, Skype, Wikis, etc.
  • Risk-taking
  • Practice viewing video and analyzing the purpose and effectiveness of various camera techniques
  • Obtain memberships in online communities centered around various forms of media, such as message boards, Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, Ning, etc.
  • Practice producing new creative forms, such as digital sampling, digital storytelling, publishing images via Flickr, publishing presentations via SlideShare, publishing videos via YouTube, TeacherTube, Blip, etc.
  • Practice collaborate problem-solving by working in groups to complete tasks and develop new knowledge through Wikipedia, Wikieducator, Second Life, and other communities
  • Engaging in podcasting and blogging
